Layali Adan Restaurant

Paying homage to the rich history of Yemeni architecture, we took design inspiration from the Kingdom of Saba for the Layali Adan restaurant. In particular, the Temple of the Sun, which to this day remains one of the most exquisite and impressive jewels in Yemen’s architectural crown.

Characterized by its composition of terracotta and timber, its ornately curved and carved walls, and crenellations, the temple holds a certain mystique, the likes of which is near impossible to replicate. And so, for Layali Adan, we have instead paid tribute to a style and place that exemplify the design ideals found at the throne of Balqis.

A variety of doors originate in different regions of Yemen, but we have opted for engraved wood for the restaurant. Beautifully sculpted, they offer the promise of a unique experience that mirrors the wonder of one of the world’s truly stunning historical sites.

White, gypsum walls give the Layali Adan restaurant a clean and cool look, while pockets of color from the stained-glass windows catch the eye. Additional light is provided by traditional lanterns hanging from the ceiling and on the walls. Gold ornaments and ancient weaponry in alcoves are backlit with yellow light to welcome guests at the entrance. Traditional artwork and tapestries adorn the walls and floor.

The restaurant’s windows have a decorative grille above colored glass set in gypsum plaster. Below the window, openings are timber shutters with glazed or stained glass behind them. Gypsum is used on all the external walls to provide extra protection against the harsh climate. The walls themselves are constructed from burnt brick set in mud mortar.

Light flows easily through transparent alabaster panels, and ventilation is obtained from the openings fitted with timber shutters. Gypsum cloaks the entire structure, and the windows are set in a wall of Zabur.
